What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are very thin covers for teeth, designed and shaped to be placed right over the front surface of your natural tooth. Porcelain veneers are very durable and last many years. They're often used in patients to:

• cover stains, yellowing and other discolorations

• cover chips and cracks

• hide gaps between teeth

• correct the appearance of uneven edges

• help teeth appear straighter and more uniform

• correct teeth that have become worn down

• correct the appearance of small teeth

Bonded to the tooth surface using strong adhesives, veneers can be an excellent alternative to crowns for some patients.

How are veneers applied?

Veneers are usually applied over two visits. During the first visit, the tooth surface will be prepared with light shaping, removing some of the tooth material to make space for the veneer. An impression will be made of your teeth so the dental lab can create veneers that are the right shape and size for your needs and you and Dr. Rayet will choose the best shade. At the second visit, the tooth surface will be cleaned with a special fluid and the veneer will be applied using a strong bonding agent and a curing light to ensure the strongest bond possible.

Do veneers require special care?

Veneers need to be cared for just like your regular teeth, with correct brushing and flossing techniques and regular dental visits to ensure they remain in top shape. While veneers are designed to resist stains, some foods can increase your risk of staining. Ask Dr. Rayet about any special care you may need to take to avoid staining, such as rinsing your mouth after drinking coffee or tea.
